Hello Awin

I Went On An Internet Approved Family Holiday To Marrakech And Here’s What It Was Truly Like…

by Kristy

I recently went on a holiday to Marrakech with my family and had a time that I would never forget. Marrakech was probably one of the most obscure vacations I have had in a long while, but only because the manifold sweet moments were still intertwined with some moments that I would rather evade. The place is still so worth it that I would probably consider going on another solo trip to Marrakech. In this blog, OG looks will talk about everything you need to know about a holiday to Marrakech and how you can make sure that you have a picture-perfect vacation with your family.

Places I Visited on my Family-friendly Holiday to Marrakech and The Stories They Hold

Jardin Majorelle

Jardin Majorelle is a horticultural garden located in Marrakech, Morocco. The garden is a verdant sanctuary adorned with resplendent azure architecture, rare flora, and cascading fountains, resulting in a visually captivating and tranquil ambiance.

Jacques Majorelle, the first proprietor, was an artist who developed a deep affection for Marrakech throughout his travels. He devoted many years to the meticulous planning and nurturing of the garden, using the vibrant hue of Majorelle Blue throughout the whole estate.

During their time in Marrakech in the 1980s, Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé came upon Jardin Majorelle. Enthralled by its aesthetic appeal, they made the decision to acquire the garden in order to guarantee its conservation. Saint-Laurent drew inspiration from the garden’s vivid hues, which subsequently shaped his sartorial designs. The vibrant azure blue hue of Yves Saint Laurent’s previous abode, along with the presence of exotic flora, generates a captivating ambiance. Be cautious of the playful mythical garden sprites; according to folklore, they borrow sunglasses for their clandestine nighttime gatherings.

La Maison de la Photographie

La Maison de la Photographie is a cultural institution that preserves and showcases the rich photographic history of the country. Established in 2009, the museum is housed in a stunning restored 19th-century residence.

The museum was founded by Patrick Manac’h and Hamid Mergani, photography enthusiasts who shared a passion for preserving Morocco’s visual heritage. The collection comprises over 10,000 photographs, ranging from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, portraying Morocco’s diverse landscapes, people, and cultural traditions. The museum’s exhibitions rotate regularly, ensuring that different aspects of Morocco’s history and identity are represented- setting the scene for the best photography in Morocco.

Medina Souks

The Medina Souks in Marrakech, Morocco, has a rich historical background that spans many centuries, transforming from busy trade hubs into lively markets. This complicated and complex network of little pathways and market booths provides a vast collection of Moroccan handiwork, ranging from vibrant fabrics to exquisitely crafted pottery. Individuals and their families have the opportunity to participate in an enthralling treasure hunt, interacting with amiable merchants and fully immersing themselves in the diverse cultural fabric of Marrakech.

The souks provide an excellent environment for a family vacation, where youngsters can admire the artistry, shop for mementoes, and forge enduring recollections among the vibrant and captivating ambience of this old bazaar.

Things to know about before going on a holiday to Marrakech

  • Make sure you know who you are talking to in Marrakech since it is quite simple to fall victim to scams there. While exploring Marrakech’s vibrant markets, a charming old vendor insisted on a “lucky carpet deal” for a rare, handmade rug from one of the famous Berber Markets. Later, I discovered it was a mass-produced imitation, but still had to pay because the vendor offered us tea, which is apparently rude to refuse in Morocco.
  • The traffic is horrible, but you have to gather the courage to step into the traffic to cross the streets, and the traffic will stop immediately, at least that is what happened to me. This is also something that I read in a lot of reviews about the place.
  • Hoard on change! Make sure that you get as many 5s and 10s as possible as the local vendors or taxi drivers may say that they do not have the change and keep the entire sum altogether.
  1. Henna is probably one of the more popular arts in Morocco, and you will find some of the best designers in the area, but there are hagglers who will stop you midway and try to forcibly get you to let them apply henna on your hands. Beware.
